JUST FOR FUN - In The Dark by Phil
I recently heard a sermon about shining Jesus's light in a dark world, and my mind went back to a rather humorous story from the road. It happened something like this...
Years ago when our kids were little, my mom sometimes went along to watch them while we were busy singing. I think we were somewhere in Nebraska, and a very gracious lady offered her basement for us to spend the night. There were a couple of bedrooms, a bathroom and inflated mattresses on the floor for the kids. We had just loaded all our stuff in, (there were four women so this took a while) and everyone was taking turns in the bathroom to get ready for bed. There was a terrible storm going on outside and the kids were a little spooked anyway when suddenly the power went out and we were plunged into TOTAL darkness. This was long before the days of smartphones with flashlights, so since we were in unfamiliar territory, I slowly and carefully felt my way to where I remembered a window and opened the blind. No help - it was as dark outside as it was inside. We calmed the kids down and told them to imagine we were on an adventure, so they were good to go. My poor mother, on the hand, was stuck in the bathroom. She had been doing her business when the lights went off and try as she might, could not locate the toilet paper. Oh, what we would have given for one little candle or flashlight. I'm not sure exactly how she solved the situation, but it did give us something to laugh about later, after my shin and toes stopped hurting and everyone's pants were dry.
Sin has turned this world into a dark place, and it seems to be getting darker each year. As Christians we can offer the light of hope found only in a relationship with Jesus. In the sermon on the mount Jesus said, "You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others that. They may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." - Matthew 5:14-16
Let's make this a year of shining for Jesus! Tell others what He has done in your life, be his hands and feet to those in need, love people as Christ loved them. Who knows, someone around you may be stuck on life's toilet this very minute. Shine your light, so they can wipe, and move on to better things. (I feel a song coming on... Pam says, "NO!")
This little light of mine, I'm gonna let it shine. How about you?
