Power in Your Pocket by Phil
Last fall we finally put our old Buick Regal out to pasture. In its seventeen years, it had seen both our girls learn to drive amid many stops, starts, jerks and swerves, all with dad hanging on for dear life in the passenger seat. It was there when Pam relearned driving with the help of a left foot accelerator after her accident. After 250,000 miles of trips to school, the store, church and everywhere in between, it was ready to hand over the reins. Goodbye old friend, rust in peace.
After lots of research and car shopping, we joyfully welcomed a 2016 Honda CR-V to our family. Cars have certainly gotten a lot smarter in the past twenty years and we are loving all the techy extras. But by far my favorite innovation is the key fob. I no longer have to push buttons to lock, unlock, and accidentally set off the car alarm. Now as long as the new fob is in my pocket, the car door automatically unlocks, the seat adjusts to my backside and the radio connects to my phone. With the push of a button, the engine starts and we are off and running. No key needed, just a small piece of plastic in my pocket. With that fob, I'm a superhero. My little Honda is always ready and awaiting my command. Oh, the power!! Now if they had only made a fob for my kids...
Speaking of power in your pocket, this is not a new idea. Check out these passages...
"I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come." - Ephesians 1:18-21
"And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit who lives in you." - Romans 8:11
That Holy Spirit power doesn't live in your pocket, (which is good since I tend to lose stuff in there) but inside your very being. Just look at all we have with that spirit living in us - hope, a glorious inheritance, incomparably great power! So why do we Christians so often live like powerless victims? That is a lie from Satan to keep us from being the awesome ambassadors God created and called us to be.
My prayer for all of us this new year is that we will live the TRUTH! We are children of God, co-heirs with Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit. Remember, "we are more than conquerors through him who loved us." - Romans 8:37b
Let's head into this new year full speed, with a fob in our pocket and God in our hearts!
